MSL – Moisture Sensitivity Level

MSL stands for Moisture Sensitivity Level. It describes the moisture sensitivity of an electronic component before reflow soldering; it is not an ESD sensitivity rating.

Why MSL is monitored

A component may absorb moisture during storage. Rapid heating can turn that moisture into vapour and cause internal damage. MSL control therefore covers floor life, dry storage, humidity indication and baking where required by the manufacturer’s documentation.
