ESD measurement and verification

Correctly selected and installed ESD equipment is only the beginning. Its effectiveness must be verified by regular measurements, functional tests and documented records. This section explains what to check, how the methods differ and why every result must be assessed within the complete ESD control programme.

What should ESD verification cover?

Verification is not a one-off activity performed just before an audit. It is a planned process confirming that workplaces, personnel and technical controls remain effective under real operating conditions. Scope, methods, acceptance limits and intervals should follow the ESD control programme, risk assessment, customer requirements and the currently applicable standards.

  • Resistance measurement verifies the electrical properties of work surfaces, floors, carts, racks, packaging and their path to ground.
  • Personnel testing checks wrist straps, ESD footwear and other personnel grounding elements.
  • Walking testing records body voltage during movement and evaluates the person–footwear–floor system dynamically.
  • Ionization verification evaluates an ionizer's charge neutralization performance and ion balance at the point of use.

Why one number is not enough

A measured value is meaningful only when the object, method, instrument and test conditions are known. Results can be affected by surface cleanliness, wear, humidity, temperature, electrode type and pressure, test voltage and measurement time. For personnel, skin contact, footwear, socks, insoles and floor condition also matter.

A record should therefore identify the location or control item, date, method, instrument, conditions, result, acceptance criterion and any corrective action. A consistent data history can reveal deterioration before it becomes a nonconformity.

From a failed result to corrective action

A failed result does not automatically mean that a product must be replaced. First verify the procedure, instrument status, electrical contacts, cleanliness, grounding connections and recent process changes. Only then can the cause be isolated and the appropriate response selected: cleaning, repair, calibration, a process change or replacement.

For a quick explanation of RTG, RTT, resistance to ground or ionization, see the ESD glossary. Instruments are available under Measurement, testing and monitoring. For independent verification, Stat-X provides on-site measurement and ESD audits.

Important: This guide is a practical overview. Set specific procedures, limits and verification intervals according to current documentation, the ESD control programme and the relevant standards.
